Running form: Tips to improve technique

Why is it important to have the correct form when running?

Good running form can help you to reduce injury and enables you to make the most of stored energy so it is more efficient. Essentially if you have good running style it will feel easier. If you have a good running posture, all your limbs can move freely and you can run efficiently - making the most of every stride.
You’ll also be able to expand you rlungs to their fullest so you can get lots of energy giving oxygen round your body.

What does it look like in theory?

  • Think about running tall with the front of your hips pointing forwards.

  • Hold your elbows at roughly right angles and drive your arms backwards from the shoulder, try not to let your arms swing round in front of you.

  • Take smaller rather than longer steps and most importantly stay relaxed.

  • If you can, try and find some green spaces to run in and maybe think about joining a group or heading to a local parkrun.

  • My final tip is to remember to smile. Just by lacing up and giving it a go, you're being amazing and reaping the benefits to your physical and mental health.
