Rekindling your running mojo with the World Athletics Championships

It might be easy to miss, but it’s currently the World Athletics Championships taking place in Eugene, Oregon. If you’re missing it, we can blame the time difference rather than a lack of interest.

But if I have piqued your interest, then do take a look - there will be clips on social media, or on catch up TV - because there has been some cracking racing with some notable medals for the British team.

I don’t coach many track and field athletes, so you may be wondering why I’m suggesting you pay attention. The thing is, running is running, whether you’re covering 100m or 10,000m or even further. Everyone is aiming to get from A to B - some slightly faster than others - a smoothly as possible, staying in jury free and enjoying it along the way.

I find great inspiration from watching people run fast, making it look easy, graceful and smooth. I like looking at different techniques and admiring the different body shapes that exist even at the highest level. A reminder that running is for everybody.

And it motivates me to get out and give it a go: to replicate running techniques, have a peek at training schedules and try moving my feet just a little bit faster.

I’m never going to be a world class athlete (and neither are you probably) but you can learn from them through consistent training, celebrating our wins and putting the effort in when necessary. You might just be able to do a little bit more than you think you can.

What’s your go-to inspiration?
